Why Build a Legacy?

Texas A&M University is rich with tradition.  The strength of the institution is lived through those traditions and through the historied legacy of generations of Aggies giving from one to the next.  In 1963 the tradition of Texas A&M was forever changed as the doors of the university were opened to women students, our presence strengthening the academic and cultural life of the institution and making a permanent mark on the history of the institution.

Today women comprise nearly half of the student body and one-third of faculty.
And today women former students all over the world distinguish themselves in their careers and their communities.  By what we achieve in life and work and family, we do honor to our legacy as former students of Texas A&M University.  The greatness of the institution lives on through our successes but can only be fully realized when through our success we give back to the institution that led us to the path we follow today.

Women former students have a unique bond with the current women student body and to the women faculty who teach and research to advance the greatness of Texas A&M.  We are their sisters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, friends, colleagues, and mentors.

Our legacy is also theirs.

And so, the Women Former Students’ Network has created a Women’s Legacy Fund.  Through the Legacy Fund, the WFSN supports students and faculty at Texas A&M and brings our shared legacy to life.  Specifically, the Women’s Legacy Fund supports:

  • Faculty Support: Faculty eligible for support will have demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to women students; robust research and teaching records; have achieved or evidenced the potential to make a significant contribution to their field of study; and demonstrated commitment to women’s issues in the profession or in the community.
  • Undergraduate Student Support:  Scholarships awarded through this endowment will be accessible to all students, but preference will be given to women students, particularly those who wish to study in disciplines where women are currently underrepresented.
  • Graduate Student Support:  Graduate fellowships awarded through this endowment will be accessible to all students, but preference will be given to women undergraduate students enrolled at Texas A&M University wishing to pursue advanced degrees and to women pursuing graduate study in disciplines where women are currently underrepresented.
  • Other Areas of Support: Distinguished lectures, visiting faculty programs, international study, or other educational or research initiatives established or supported by this endowment will advance the well-being of women faculty and/or students at Texas A&M University.
